Accurate and quick drilling up to 10 x d

Centering / pilot drilling and drilling

CrazyDrill Alu represents a well-coordinated program with the CrazyDrill Pilot (pilot drill respectively short drill). The base for precise deep hole drilling and stable machining is provided by the pilot drilling with CrazyDrill Pilot or, on inclined surfaces, with CrazyDrill Crosspilot. The pilot drill ensures a high position accuracy due to its short and sturdy construction. The pilot hole is the guidance for the subsequent drill (CrazyDrill Alu 5 to 10 x d) to guide it cylindrically and guarantee the straightness and perpendicularity of the deep hole.

The quality of the drilling  as well as the stable machining process (no jamming) are guaranteed by means of a predetermined tool tolerance.

Tolerance of the pilot drill CrazyDrill Pilot (m5):

< 3 mm (.118”): + 0.002 mm /+ 0.006 mm (.00008” /+ .00024”)
≤ 6 mm (.236”): + 0.004 mm /+ 0.009 mm (.00016” /+ .00035”)

Tolerance of the pilot drill CrazyDrill Crosspilot (slanted drilling) (k6):

< 3 mm (.118”): 0 mm /+ 0.006 mm (.0” /+ .00024”)
≤ 6 mm (.236”): +0.001 mm /+ 0.009 mm (.00004” /+ .00035”)

Tolerance of the follow-up drill CrazyDrill Alu 5 x d and 10 x d (k5):

< 3 mm (.118”): 0 mm /+ 0.004 mm (.0” /+ .00016”)
≤ 6 mm (.236“): 0.001 mm /+ 0.006 mm (.00004“ /+ .00024“)

Drilling process

General information

In the industry of metal work tools, shorter processing times are always in high demand. At the same time, the requirements to the manufacturing precision and the process reliability are extremely high. In order to fulfill these requirements, the "machine tool – spindle – tool – tool holder" system need to be considered as a whole (see additional info).

For the use of CrazyDrill Alu and CrazyDrill Pilot, Mikron Tool has defined a fast and reliable procedure which achieves optimal drilling results.

Quick drilling up to 5 x d

1. If required: pilot drilling (in one step):

  • Pilot drilling or centering is recommended on an irregular or inclined material surface

2. Drilling up to 5 x d in one step

Quick drilling up to 10 x d

1. If required: pilot drilling (in one step):

  • Pilot drilling or centering is recommended on an irregular or inclined material surface, need for higher degree of position accuracy

2. Drilling up to 10 x d with chip break and chip removal (pecks)

1. If required, pilot drilling up to drilling depth of 2 x d or centering:

2. CrazyDrill Alu:

  • Activate external cooling
  • Drill at recommended cutting speed  and feed rate (see cutting data)  in one step

  • After the desired cutting depth is reached with the drill, return at feed rate or rapid traverse

2. CrazyDrill Alu 10 x d:

  • Activate external cooling
  • First step Q1: drill at recommended drilling speed and feed rate (see cutting data) to maximum drilling depth Q1 in one step, afterwards remove chips

  • After the desired drilling depth is reached with the drill, return at feed rate or rapid traverse

Note:

Drill can be retracted completely from the hole between pecks. However if vibrations occur, we  recommend that the drill is NOT retracted completely from the hole.

Tested and approved

Mikron Tool has determined the ideal cutting parameters (drilling speed to tool life ratio and process reliability) when using CrazyDrill Alu and CrazyDrill Pilot. These are listed in the cutting data tables according to drill diameter, drilling depth and material to be machined. The detailed cutting data tested by Mikron Tool, such as cutting speed Vc, feed rate f and drilling impact Q, permit a quick and secure machining.

The overview of the cutting values table according to material group, material type, hardness degree and tensile strength, material number, DIN and AISI/ASTM/UNS permits quick determination of the parameters to be used.

Packaging

An impact-resistant and user-friendly drill packaging is absolutely necessary for CrazyDrill Alu.  Mikron Tool offers all tools of the CrazyDrill Alu family in  a high quality, single package.
