CrazyDrill Coolpilot Titanium ATC

With CrazyDrill Coolpilot Titanium ATC, Mikron Tool offers a pilot and short drill for titanium alloys in the diameter range of 1.0 mm to 6.35 mm (.039” to .250”, fractional inches available) (small drill for titanium). This pilot or short drill is designed with internal helicoidally arranged cooling channels (drill with through-tool cooling), which bring up to four times more coolant volume to the coated drill tip. CrazyDrill Coolpilot Titanium perfectly prepares follow-up deep drilling with CrazyDrill Cool Titanium ATC. If desired, a countersink of 90° can be applied in the same drilling process (countersink drill bit). This tungsten carbide drill is also highly suitable as a stand-alone and extremely precise short drill for drilling titanium alloys up to a maximum drilling depth of 3 x d.
Pilot and short drilling in titanium alloys with CrazyDrill Coolpilot Titanium ATC
CrazyDrill Coolpilot Titanium ATC is designed as a pilot and short drill with an integrated countersink cutting edge (short drill and deburring tool) for machining titanium alloys. Therefore, it is the ideal complement of CrazyDrill Cool Titanium ATC (drilling depth up to 10 x d). The tolerances are designed to perfectly match those of the long drill. When combined, no transition from pilot to follow-up hole is measurable.
Also, with CrazyDrill Coolpilot Titanium ATC, you can drill quickly, accurately and reliably. This is thanks to various factors, such as the tool’s material-specific and specially ground cutting-edge geometry, new guiding margins, and the unique shape of its integrated cooling channels.
Material-specific cutting-edge geometries
Controlled chip removal, high drilling speeds, and repeatable processes, with the best hole quality at the same time, can only be achieved with a material-specific cutting-edge geometry since the material properties of titanium alloys (high strength with low ductility) and pure titanium (high corrosion resistance with poor mechanical properties) differ significantly.
Special cutting-edge geometry with optimum cutting ability and stability
Sharply ground cutting edges, which are also stable, prevent tool jamming. As a result, cutting pressures and temperature are significantly reduced. The result: no tool breakage.
The guiding margins have very smooth surfaces to prevent material adhesion. At the same time, cutting forces and hole quality remain unchanged, and the load on the tool is reduced.
Innovative cooling concept
High-temperature load on the cutting edges can be a challenge when drilling titanium. The patented special shape of the new cooling channels enables up to 4 times higher coolant quantity (compared to conventional cooling channels) at the same pressure. At the same time, the massive coolant jet flushes the chips through the flutes and prevents any form of chip jam. This prevents uncontrolled drill breakage.

Pilot drilling with CrazyDrill Coolpilot Titanium ATC is the perfect base for precise drilling position with high alignment precision. Because the diameter tolerances and tip angle are perfectly matched, no transition from pilot to follow-up hole is measurable (for example, with CrazyDrill Cool Titanium ATC). A long tool life of the follow-up drill and continuous high drilling quality are both guaranteed.
Pilot drilling and chamfering in one step
Pilot or short drilling up to 3 x d can be performed in one step. Thanks to the pilot hole, the follow-up drill is guided perfectly, to ensure that the follow-up hole is completely straight. Due to the integrated countersink cutting edge, a countersink of 90° can be placed simultaneously with the pilot bore. So with one less tool to change, machining time is reduced. In addition, the double, slim guiding margin ensures the highest degree of straightness and surface quality.
