Pilot drilling with innovative integrated cooling
With CrazyDrill Coolpilot, Mikron Tool offers a pilot and short drill for stainless steels, heat-, acid-resistant and CrCo alloys in the diameter range of 1.0 to 6.35 mm (.039“ to .250“, fractional inches available). This twist drill type is designed with internal helicoidally arranged cooling channels which bring up to four times more coolant volume to the drill tip. CrazyDrill Coolpilot is the perfect preparation for deep hole drilling with CrazyDrill Cool SST-Inox and realizes simultaneously, if requested, a 90° counter bore (countersink drill bit). It finds also a perfect application as an autonomous, precision short drill for depths of max. 3 x d.
Efficient pilot and short drilling in stainless steel
with CrazyDrill Coolpilot
CrazyDrill Coolpilot has been developed as pilot and short drill with integrated cutting edge for the placement of a countersink for the machining of stainless steel, heat-, acid-resistant and CrCo alloys. Therefore, this solid carbide drill bit is the ideal complement of CrazyDrill Cool SST-Inox (drilling depth up to 40 x d). Due to diameter tolerances perfectly matched to this deep hole twist drill type of Mikron Tool, no transition from pilot to follow-up hole is measurable.
Also, CrazyDrill Coolpilot allows to drill quickly, accurately and reliably. Various factors are responsible for this singular performance: an innovative geometry and coating and a new through-tool coolant.
The new chip flute profile is divided into two areas: a front chip flute area with a special chip breaker shape ensures compact, short and curved chips; a rear chip flute area with extended flute shape ensures perfect chip removal.
The new high-performance coating (copper red) is heat- and wear-resistant, prevents build-up edges and promotes uniform chip flushing. A very long tool life is given.
New generation of cooling channels
The extraordinary performance and process accuracy of CrazyDrill Coolpilot is based in first instance by its cooling characteristics: two helicoidal internal coolant channels which go up to the drill tip guarantee a constant cooling during the entire drilling operation. The coolant channels in its cross section are similar to the shape of a drop and enable up to 4 times more coolant flow compared to the today’s common circular cross section channels.
For small drill sizes under diameter 3 mm (.118“), an additional „power chamber“ provides sufficient coolant flow: large, hollow section in the shank supplies more coolant flow to the two twisted cooling channels.
The advantage of this efficient cooling, which goes up to the tool tip, is definitely a higher tool life because the overheating of the cutting edges is avoided right from the beginning. Combined with the best suitable geometry, this cooling helps that the chips are broken easier and can be flushed out of the spiral flutes more easily. All these factors are needed for a machining process with higher cutting parameters (speeds and feed) and for drilling without chip removal / pecking.
Important: Adapted to the CrazyDrill Program
Pilot drilling with CrazyDrill Coolpilot is the perfect base for precise drilling position with high alignment precision. Due to diameter tolerances and tip angle perfectly matched no transition from pilot to follow-up hole is measurable (for example with CrazyDrill Cool SST-Inox). Long tool life of the follow-up drill and continuous high drilling quality is guaranteed.
Pilot drilling and chamfering in one step
Pilot or short drilling up to 3 x d is realized in one step. Thanks to the pilot hole, the follow-up drill is guided perfectly, ensuring high straightness of the follow-up hole. Due to the integrated countersink cutting edge, simultaneously with the pilot bore a countersink of 90° can be placed. Saving one tool change, machining time is reduced, simultaneously the double, slim guiding margin ensures highest degree of straightness and surface quality.
